Rhea Kuhlman
Rhea was born in Miami, Florida and raised in Philadelphia. She has a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Virginia, and has worked in local government in various capacities, gradually working her way west until she bumped into the Pacific Ocean. She retired from the City of San Diego as Assistant Director of the Property (Real Estate) Department, and then indulged in her greatest love – books, becoming a rare book dealer until her second retirement in 2023. Rhea is a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, and has been a Unitarian since the late 1970s, attracted by the Unitarian principles of universal love, inclusion, and reverence for the earth. She has been active in social justice work throughout her adult life, most recently with Women’s Empowerment International, an organization which makes microloans to help low-income women start small businesses. She is active in her church’s food pantry, which serves over 600 families a week, and the accompanying diaper bank serving low-
income families in South Bay, and she co-chairs the church’s Climate Justice group with her husband Armin. She feels a sense of urgency about the current state of the physical environment and the irreversible changes being wrought by human beings. In her spare time, Rhea serves on the Board of the Bankers Hill Community Group, loves to exercise and walk in nature, and belongs to three book clubs. You can usually find her with her nose in a book.
