Jim Brown
Following his undergraduate degree in the History of Modern Art, Jim shifted gears and went to the Episcopal Theological School for 2 years
where he learned pastoral and small group management skills. After his time in seminary he shifted his direction again and returned to college to
obtain an education in geology which included studies in paleobiology and oceanography. He then traveled to UC Santa Barbara where his Master’s
thesis described Death Valley limestones formed 400 million years ago in a unique shallow water environment. Following this degree, Jim moved
back to the East Coast and worked in several environmentally related businesses, in one of which he served in a leading finance role.
Once he settled for good in Boston and then Cambridge, Jim educated himself in geographic information systems and began to work as a GIS
Analyst working for 25 years at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. As a member of the Wetlands Conservancy he
helped to construct and maintain the state’s wetlands and seagrass datalayers. At the same time he served on the steering committee for the
Cambridge part of 350 Massachusetts. Plus he helped found two church environmental groups. During the last decade or so he has concentrated
on studying earth science issues of the Climate Crisis. Jim and his wife moved to San Diego three years ago. He is an avid guitar player and
singer, and has keen interests in meditation, exercise, birdwatching, and following the tennis circuit.
